Artistic Directors' Note
Good evening, and welcome to Mainstage Dance 2025.
Each year in March, the at the School of Creative and Performing Arts’ Dance Division brings to the stage the resulting works of distinct and concurrent eight-week choreographic intensives during which our students are immersed as performers in the processes of professional choreographers.
This season, the production features a fresh new work from guest artist Barbara England, the premiere of a large ensemble piece by faculty member Marie France Forcier, and the remount of an exciting work never seen before in Calgary by Decidedly Jazz Danceworks’ Artistic Director Kimberley Cooper.
England’s deep dive into the organic feminine, Forcier’s dystopian ode to merrymaking, and Cooper’s deft stormy rhythmicity will take you on a stimulating, aesthetically diverse journey.
Enjoy the show!

Program Notes
This piece weaves together the raw history of hysteria and the evolving presence of AI to examine how far society has come in understanding women’s health. Through movement, it interrogates the lingering biases that persist in both medical and social contexts, questioning whether the systems that shape our perceptions have evolved – or merely been reprogrammed.
“Hysteria”: A now-discredited medical diagnosis, historically applied to women, describing excessive or uncontrollable emotions or physical symptoms without an identifiable physical cause. The term has been criticized for its historical use to dismiss or control women's emotions and behaviors.
“Artificial Intelligence”: AI models, such as Chat GPT and Alexa, retrieve information from large, publicly available datasets. AI undergoes “reinforcement learning from human feedback” (RLHF), where humans help refine responses in real-time, to make them more useful and accurate.
Thanks
A special thank you to Mark Hopkins for being an outside eye and A+ friend. Much gratitude to the dancers who showed up with curiosity, enthusiasm, and thoughtfulness throughout this process.

She has been with DJD since 1989, as a dancer (1989-2013), Resident Choreographer/ Artistic Associate (2002-2013), and Artistic Director (2013-). She was named Emerging Artist of the Year by Alberta Dance Alliance (2002). Since then, she has created over 20 full-length works for DJD and many shorter pieces. In 2023 DJD made its debut performance at Jacob’s Pillow with her piece, Family of Jazz. Cooper has also created many independent works, including remounts and/or commissions at University of Calgary (1996/2025), SUNY Potsdam NY (2006) Western Michigan University (2023), Southern Methodist University, Dallas (2023), and Salve Regina University, Newport RI (2019, 2023 & 2024). At Salve Regina she was thrilled to make history at their inaugural Bridging the Gap Festival (2024) which included DJD performing her work in the first dance performance ever at the Newport Jazz Festival. During the pandemic, Cooper created a series of eight short films with DJD under the umbrella title suspending disbelief. The first in the series premiered at the Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center in New York City (2024). Cooper served as Artist in Residence during Calgary, Cultural Capital of Canada (2012), and with Fall for Dance North in Toronto (2020-2022). Coming Soon....

I am an independent choreographer, dance artist, and interdisciplinary performance maker. After a decade of performing contemporary dance pieces for the stage, my practice broadened to include installation, participatory performance, and dance on film. My approach to dance shifted after completing postgraduate studies in conceptual choreography at Sozo vim (DE), and I’ve been making things ever since. My work is shaped by the people I work with and the places I encounter, including near-and-dear collaborators, mentors, and artistic research residencies. My work is stylistically undefined, with the process and outcomes depending on the unique alchemy of the people, personalities, and circumstances of the room. Whether it results in a dance piece for the stage or a participatory public art happening, I try to approach every piece with experimental vigour and collective care.
My work (solo and collaborations) has been supported by Springboard’s Fluid Festival, Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks’ Artistic Residency Program, Facet Music, Ginger Beef, Sozo vim (DE), AND_Lab (PT), Calgary Arts Development, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Canada Council for the Arts. I have benefited from professional development through Montreal Danse’s International Choreographer’s Retreat (2024), AND_Lab’s creative residency, The Banff Centre for the Arts programs and residencies, and European-wide workshops. I am also a member of the Board of Directors of Ballet Bodies YYC and the Creative Engagement Coordinator at Momentum (a non-profit organization that works in poverty reduction).
