Women of the Fur Trade

Set against the backdrop of the Canadian fur trade in the 1800s, this fearless and irreverent comedy retells the story of Louis “hottie with a brain” Riel through the unapologetic voices of women history forgot. As they navigate love, friendship, and survival, their whip-smart banter slices through the myths of history, offering a feminist reimagining of a nation in flux.
SCPA Drama proudly presents the Calgary premiere of Frances Koncan’s critically acclaimed hit, with sold out runs in Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Thunderbay, Regina and Stratford. Part satire, part revolution, this is the fur trade like you’ve never seen it before.

Geordie Cowan

For decades, Métis people have been denied their heritage, knowledge, and culture. We have been conditioned to hide our pride and our identity. Even though I’ve been Métis my whole life, I never really understood it until my late 20s. Reclaiming these aspects of being Métis has been transformational in understanding not just my identity as an artist but also my identity as a Canadian.

Oppression affects everyone, directly and/or indirectly, but together we can change the course of history to benefit us all. Through the strength of our friendships, we are more influential than any small men with big ideas that stand in our way. Frances Koncan uses Women Of The Fur Trade to remind us that history is cyclical and the struggles that once plagued history will continue to plague us today.

At the beginning, we encounter Marie-Angelique, a Métis woman caught between her two friends as she discovers what it means to inhabit both of these identities. Through her as the central lens, we follow these characters on a journey of discovery as they navigate sexism, racism, and classism throughout the play.

In Canada, the rebellion was a dark time in our history where land was lost, cultures were suppressed, people were killed, and everyone suffered. Koncan has crafted a poignant, witty, and hilarious piece of theatre that speaks to the challenges faced by people, specifically Métis people, which they continue to face today. Utilizing contemporary dialogue and references, the audience is given the opportunity to connect with these characters on a relatable level.

Each character represents a group of people directly impacted, whether Indigenous peoples, settlers, Métis, or immigrants, allowing the audience insight into a range of struggles. Koncan's version of pseudo-realism enables the audience to inhabit a world of dick-measuring and violence, contrasted by a world full of safety and naiveté. And it is only when Marie-Angelique steps between those worlds that we can understand that the truth lies between them, in both of them, and in neither.

It was an absolute treat to work with these actors and witness the effort that each one of them put into their characters. It was a pleasure to share this project with the undeniably talented MFA designers, Lane Shordee and Polina Kaulio. Special thanks to my supervisor, Christine Brubaker, for her guidance and expertise in helping me navigate this learning process.

The first time I read this play was in an Indigenous Playwriting class. I remember being enamoured by its comedic dialogue set against the tragic backdrop of the Métis rebellion. It was the first time that I was introduced to something inherently Métis within theatre. If only I had known then where I'd be.

“My people will sleep for one hundred years, but when they awake, it will be the artists who give them their spirit back.” - Louis Riel
