Kristina Penn's striking photograph of frazil ice in Tasààn Zhat Chù’ (Copper Joe Creek) selected as this year’s design

The call for submission for the 2024 Faculty of Arts holiday card attracted a wide range of entries from students. A photo by Kristina Penn, a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography, was chosen as the 2024 design.

Artist Statement: In turbulent rivers, water can become supercooled and when it interacts with the bottom, edges or obstructions, fine crystals of frazil ice can form like those pictured in this photograph. Tasààn Zhat Chù’ (Copper Joe Creek) is one of the many creeks contributing water to Lhù’ààn Mân (Kluane Lake). This creek remains active year-round due to the discharge of groundwater, with a layer of surface ice and snow insulating it from freezing up completely in the winter.

Kristina Penn is a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts, University of Calgary. Penn’s research focuses on the critical relationship between glaciers and freshwater resources in the Lhù’ààn Mân (Kluane Lake) watershed in Yukon Territory. This project was inspired by conversations and questions at a community meeting, where members of the Kluane First Nation and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations communities discussed growing concerns around water resource security in the face of changing climate and disconnections of the lake basin from nearby glaciers. Penn’s research aims to answer questions raised at this community meeting and involves data co-interpretation with members of the community.

Penn’s work has been printed onto a limited-edition card, as well as formatted as a digital image for website and social media.

Congratulations to Kristina Penn, and a sincere thank you to all students who submitted their artworks for consideration.
