A Call to All SCPA Students to Perform in a New Work

Written about mental health for Acts of Kindness on January 24, 2022

A call to all SCPA students to perform in a new work written FOR YOU about mental health for Acts of Kindness on January 24, 2022.

Music by alumna Ashley Seward, text by Clem Martini and Ashley Seward

no matter
how long

the drought
never doubt
rain is coming
rain is coming

What is it?
The very first Acts of Kindness event will feature an evening of Drama, Dance, and Music student performances in support of the Week of Kindness. It will include the premiere of “Stay”, a choral piece with spoken and sung parts, accompanied by a string quartet and conducted by Jean-Louis Bleau. The piece explores mental health and suicide awareness. We will come together as a school to celebrate our connection to one another, remember Drama student Michael Brendan Fischer Summers, and deepen the conversations around student mental health.

Do I have to be a singer?
No! The work was commissioned and written accessibly for all SCPA students. While it helps if you can carry a tune to join Choir 1, there is something for everyone.

How do I get involved?
Email Dr. Laura Hynes (lhynes@ucalgary.ca) with your name and voice type (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) if you can commit to the rehearsals and participate. She will send you a link to the score and a MIDI sound file. In the first rehearsal, all participants will learn the piece together, so if you don't read music, don't worry!

Rehearsal schedule:
Thursday, January 13, 6-7:30 pm, spoken parts and Choir 1 (CHF 007)
Monday, January 17, 6:30-8:00 pm, with all voices and instruments (CHF 007)
Thursday, January 20, 7-8:30 pm, with all voices and instruments (CHF 007)
Monday, January 24, 6 pm dress rehearsal, 8 pm performance (Eckhardt-Grammatté Hall)
