Faculty of Arts takes the lead with 2021 Royal Society of Canada inductions
The Faculty of Arts basked in the glow of well warranted institutional pride on Wednesday as the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) revealed its 2021 UCalgary inductees into its venerated ranks. With 10 UCalgary faculty members newly inducted into the RSC – seven with Fellowships and three into the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists – it must be noted that six of those inductees’ hail from the Faculty of Arts.
The Fellowship winners from this faculty are professors Bart Beaty (English), Keith Dobson (Psychology), Apostolos Serletis (Economics) and Keith Yeates (Psychology). Inducted into the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists are Sheri Madigan (Psychology) and author/musician Vivek Shraya (English).
This is the highest number of RSC Fellowships UCalgary has ever won (tied with 2008) and not only is it the most Fellowships the Faculty of Arts has ever won in a single year, but it is also the most Fellowships any faculty has ever won (tied with Cumming School of Medicine in 2009).
“This truly is a landmark moment for the Faculty of Arts, with national recognition being given to the innovative and important work being done in this faculty,” says our Dean Richard Sigurdson. “It also shines a tremendous spotlight on the sheer breadth of our research. The Royal Society of Canada is honouring internationally renowned scholars here, in fields ranging from the study of depression and monetary economics to pediatric brain injuries, comics studies, and the psychological determinants of child development. Add to that an acclaimed author whose writings are challenging cultural assumptions about race, gender, and sexuality in very bold ways.”
“Each one of these faculty members are leaders in their respective fields. I can say without reservation that this university couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments.”
