Every October, the University of Calgary honours the Killam Scholars and Laureates, some of our most outstanding faculty, postdoctoral scholars and doctoral students. Again this year, the university will celebrate the Killams with an online event Oct. 14, from 1-1.45 p.m.

The Killams comprise several awards supported by the Killam Trusts, established by Dorothy J. Killam in honour of her late husband, Izaak Walton Killam. They were established to develop and expand the work of Canadian universities. And since the University of Calgary became independent from the University of Alberta in 1966, we have been privileged to be one of only five select universities supported by the trusts. As such, the Killams are among the most prestigious awards available to UCalgary researchers.

“The Killam Trusts play a key role in the University of Calgary’s drive to find innovative ways to improve societies around us and provide vital support to scholars across disciplines,” said Dr. Teri Balser, provost and vice-president (academic). “We’re honoured to be one of Canada’s Killam universities, and we look forward to celebrating the excellence and creativity of our scholars.”

The Killams are awarded in the following categories:

  • McCaig-Killam Teaching Award
  • Killam Graduate Supervision Award
  • Killam Award in Undergraduate Mentorship
  • Killam Emerging Research Leader Award
  • Killam Research Excellence Award
  • Killam Annual Professors
  • Killam Visiting Scholars
  • Killam Memorial Chair
  • Killam Memorial Emerging Chair
  • Killam Pre-Doctoral Laureates (PhD students)
  • Killam Post-Doctoral Laureates
  • Donald N Byers Memorial Killam Prize for Best Statement of Program of Studies and Research

Again this year, the celebration will be a virtual event, which allows for more members of our community to salute the remarkable recipients and learn more about the Killam Trusts’ legacy at the University of Calgary.

Register to attend the 2021 Killam Celebration, Oct. 14, from 1-1.45 p.m.

More than 600 scholars from virtually every graduate program offering a doctoral degree at the University of Calgary have benefited from Killam awards.
