Mental health support options at Student Wellness Services

Support can look different to everyone. When it comes to mental health, students have many support options to explore at student wellness services. Here are some of the mental health services currently available.
Mental Health

1 on 1 support

Student Wellness Services offers two main modes of mental health support that can help you with a mental health concern, increase your confidence in your academic abilities, or help you in understanding your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Both virtual and in-person appointments are available.

  • One-at-a-time counselling

With one-on-one counselling you have faster access to help when you need it. In these sessions, you can bring up concerns about issues you might be facing. In the 75-minute appointment, you and a counsellor can create strategies that can help you in various ways, whether that be with emotions, behaviour, healing from trauma or even finding new ways to make positive change.

  • Coordinated care

Coordinated care sessions are designed to help you reach wellness through strategic problem solving. In a 60-minute appointment you can work towards improving your personal functioning, learn how to manage problematic behaviours and plan towards improving your general well-being. Coordinated care provides both on- and off-campus support for students that need it. Counsellors will help you plan out your wellness journey while providing you resources that will help you along the way.

Peer support

If you feel more comfortable talking with a peer, Student Wellness Services has trained student volunteers that will listen and talk with you about your concerns. Peer listening requires no appointment. Drop in between 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. if you feel like you could use the support.

Self-help resources

Student Wellness Services has many self-help options to explore. Students have access to resources such as videos and webinars that can help you learn new coping skills and strategies at your own pace.

There are online recourses for various issues you might be facing such as anxiety, ADHD, depression, financial instability, stress and many more. These resources are available to access anytime, and there is no need for appointments or walk-ins.

Workshops

If you prefer a strategic approach to improving your mental health, wellness workshops are for you. There are workshops related to stress and anxiety management, motivation, and self-care to name a few. Educating yourself through workshops can help you determine the steps you could take towards improving your well-being.

Training

Do you know someone who needs help but doesn't feel comfortable asking a professional? You can help them. Training programs offered by student wellness services provide specialized training to help you develop the skills you need to recognize and understand individuals at risk, and how to get them the support they need. Training opportunities include suicide intervention and prevention, substance abuse, recognizing distress, and more.

If you or someone you know is currently experiencing a mental health crisis and needs immediate support, you can access 24/7 support through the Distress Centre.

If you’re thinking about suicide or are worried about a friend or loved one, the Canada Suicide Prevention Service is available 24/7 for voice and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. MST for text.
