Predictable is a word rarely used to describe the post-secondary classroom experience in recent years. For many University of Calgary researchers, new developments in the way that courses are taught have not been cause for concern, but a jumping-off point for curious new questions and bold ideas about teaching pedagogy.
Each year, researchers at UCalgary submit project proposals about how to improve the student experience, explore existing ideas, and generate new knowledge about how teaching and learning happens across many academic disciplines. Since 2014, the University of Calgary Teaching and Learning Grants have awarded approximately $6.5 million in funding to 292 projects to support scholarly teaching practices and approaches to student learning.
“This year’s award recipients are asking the kind of innovative and interesting questions that have broad impacts and contribute to research and scholarship in teaching and learning across campus,” says Dr. Heather Jamniczky, PhD, academic lead in teaching and learning research at the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning.
In 2023, a total of $418,715 was provided to 20 projects on a number of unique scholarly topics, including the design of workshops for trans-affirming mental health care, multi-course open-access chemistry textbooks, and investigating workload perceptions between students and professors. See the list of all grant recipients.
"The funding awarded by University of Calgary Teaching and Learning Grants makes it possible for exciting projects to be developed and reach the broader community,” says Jamniczky. "Innovative projects like these take form when researchers have both the support and the means to make their bold and innovative ideas into a reality."
The University of Calgary Teaching and Learning Grants are funded by the Provost's Office. The 2024 application cycle will be launched shortly and will be communicated widely across campus. More information can be found by visiting the program web page.
