Remembering Ann Sherman

The Werklund School of Education mourns the passing of our colleague and friend, Dr. Ann Sherman

Ann Sherman

Ann joined, what was then, the Faculty of Education as a Professor in 2006. During her time at the University of Calgary, she served as Vice Dean, Associate Dean Graduate Programs as well as on a number of university and faculty committees.

Ann was proud to have taught both high school and elementary school for thirteen years as well as serving as an elementary school administrator for three years before returning to university and then continuing to work at the university level. Ann received her BSc degree in Education from St. Francis Xavier University, her MEd degree from the University of New Brunswick and her PhD degree from the University of Nottingham. For the last seven years, Dr. Sherman has served as the Dean of Education at the University of New Brunswick.

Ann taught in university settings since 1996 and most recently in the areas of research effective teaching, formative assessment, inquiry based science, and the connections between all three. Collaboration was a main stay of her research life and looked forward to new collaborations in the areas of assessment, early learning, science education and leadership.

Ann was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and at that time, she was hopeful that surgery and immunotherapy treatment would successful.  However, in mid-July she received news that her cancer prognosis was not good.  She entered hospice on July 26.

Ann received the news of her prognosis in true Ann fashion—fully of courage, determination, and adaptability.  In her final days she wrote:

“I want you to know that I am very accepting of this all and can only think about the most amazing life that I have had. I have such incredible friends and family.  I think of all the experiences I have had…travel, meeting kings, children in arctic villages, prime ministers, on every continent except Antarctica.  I am so excited about the life that I have had and you all know how crazy I am about my nephews and nieces and great niece and nephews!”

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Christ Church Cathedral Fredericton, New Brunswick. Complete details can be found on the MadDiarmid Mundle Coulter website.
