The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sonya Lee, MD, as the department head for Family Medicine, effective July 1, 2020.

Sonya is the successor to former department head, Dr. Charles Leduc, MD. Thank you to Charles for his tremendous leadership over the years.

Sonya joined the University of Calgary’s Department of Family Medicine in 2006 where she is currently an assistant professor and the academic deputy department head. Sonya is also a community-based family physician at the Central Family Medicine Teaching Clinic (CFMTC) in Calgary.

Throughout her career, Sonya has taught in undergraduate medical education and clinical clerkship, has been a preceptor for residency learners, and has contributed extensively to faculty development and continuing professional development. She has held numerous leadership roles with the Department of Family Medicine, including director of continuing professional development, education site lead for the CFMTC, chair of the Alternative Relationship Plan Management Committee, and vice-chair of the Academic Medicine and Health Services Program Management Committee. Sonya is also a board member for the Alberta College of Family Physicians and the current board chair for the Foundation for Medical Practice Education.

As a research collaborator, Sonya has been part of successful peer reviewed team grant applications funded by the Office of Health and Medical Education Scholarship, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Her research and scholarship interests include teaching and learning, and competency-based medical education.

Sonya has received numerous awards, including the University of Calgary McLeod Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching in 2010. She was also nominated for the Outstanding Family Physician of the Year award in 2012, an award presented by Alberta Health Services’ Calgary Zone.

Sonya is known as a strong team member and her passion for teaching and mentorship make her an excellent fit for this new role. She looks forward to helping advance and transform the Department of Family Medicine to serve students, faculty, patients and families.

Please join me in congratulating Sonya on her new role within the CSM.

Sincerely,
