Statement of solidarity

The School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures at University of Calgary expresses solidarity with colleagues from Laurentian University, and denounces the cuts in programs and layoff of colleagues. Laurentian University is a public institution with a special tricultural mandate to offer postsecondary programming in English and French with a comprehensive approach to Indigenous education. We recognize the importance of French-language programming in postsecondary studies outside of Québec for the vitality of the Franco-Canadian community, and the loss represented by the closure of 28 French-language programs. We also recognize the importance of maintaining Modern Language programs and their place in a fully-rounded university with global connections.
