Working Group on African Navies Secures National Defence Grant
In early December, Canada's Department of National Defence (DND), through its Mobilizing Insights in Defence and Security (MINDS) Program, awarded a Targeted Engagement Grant to an international, interdisciplinary research network led by scholars from UCalgary Faculty of Arts and a private sector partner, African Access Consulting. The grant recognizes UCalgary's continuing expertise in military history, strategic studies, and African studies, and builds on seed funding provided to Tim Stapleton (History) and Rowland Apentiik (African Studies) by the Calgary Institute for the Humanities for the “African Navies: Offshore Resources, Security, Sovereignty and Development" Working Group. The DND-funded project will be managed by Chris W. J. Roberts, President of African Access Consulting (and contract instructor in Political Science). “African Navies & Maritime Security in an Age of Global Rivalry: Implications for Canadian Defence Policy,” has already mobilized experts from three continents and will produce a series of webinars, policy papers, and an open-access edited book with UCalgary Press in 2021, under the editorial direction of Tim Stapleton and Rob Huebert (Political Science).
