Dr. Maureen Hiebert

Dr. Maureen Hiebert’s research examines how authoritarian and democratic states have used the law to perpetrate the crime of genocide against vulnerable groups labelled through the law as deviant and dangerous. As well, she researches the implications of autonomous weapons and military AIs in warfare. This includes the risks of incorrectly, and unlawfully, targeting civilians based on algorithms that may end up “teaching” autonomous systems to target civilian persons of colour.
