Silver Gummy Centre for Gender Research

Where evidence meets action for gender equity

SILVER GUMMY CENTRE FOR GENDER RESEARCH

The Silver Gummy Centre for Gender Research brings researchers and community partners together to collaborate on critical areas of research relating to gender equity and decreasing gender‑based violence in our community.

Through innovative, community-engaged research, the Centre advances solutions that strengthen safety, belonging and opportunity for people of all genders across systems — including schools, workplaces and health and social services.

Established through a 10-year philanthropic commitment from the Silver Gummy Foundation, the Centre reflects a shared belief that lasting change requires open dialogue, critical education, strong partnerships and evidence-informed action that challenges harmful gender norms.

Research and community collaboration

Embedded in the Faculty of Arts, the Centre draws on research excellence from across the University of Calgary while connecting into a local, national and international network of researchers. The Centre is a place where scholars, students and communities from a variety of backgrounds – not just one community or faculty – can come together to:

  • Identify emerging and urgent questions
  • Engage in informed and respectful dialogue
  • Conduct research with an impact on real-world challenges
  • Strengthen local, national and international networks

Through collaboration across disciplines and sectors, the Centre advances solutions that are informed by lived experience and grounded in research excellence.

“The Silver Gummy Centre for Gender Research reflects the kind of community‑engaged research that defines the University of Calgary — in which partnership, evidence and action come together to create change. The Centre will generate vital scholarship that strengthens the systems of support, safety and belonging for all.”

What we do

Build community partnerships

We work alongside community organizations, service providers, policymakers and advocates to co-create research questions, solutions and strategies for impact.

Lead and support research

We foster interdisciplinary research that addresses the root causes and systemic dimensions of gender inequity and gender-based violence.

Mobilize knowledge

We translate research into accessible tools, policy insights, public dialogue and practical solutions that strengthen system navigation and service delivery.

Our approach

Evidence to impact

Translate research into real‑world change with community partners

Co‑created solutions

Build with, not for, communities affected by inequities

Inclusive by design

Approaches shaped by intersecting identities and lived experiences

Why are we called the Silver Gummy Centre for Gender Research?

To be gender inclusive
Neither the colour silver nor the metal are viewed as masculine or feminine and we’re guessing that you don’t know what gender a gummy bear is.
To promote community-engaged gender research
The Centre makes room for everyone and signals a commitment to engaging diverse communities in conversations about equity, safety and social change.
To recognize the Centre’s founding donor
The Silver Gummy Centre for Gender Research honours the founding donor whose commitment makes this work possible.

“Real change begins with honest conversations, courageous ideas and evidence that reflects lived experience. We recognize that change is only possible when research institutions, community programming, schools and youth have reciprocal relationships of teaching and learning. The Silver Gummy Centre for Gender Research at the University of Calgary reflects our commitment to promoting gender equity to ultimately reduce sexual and gender-based violence through education.”
