President's Stampede BBQ

The Calgary Stampede kicks off in just over a week and Stampede-goers are welcoming back some of their favourite events for the first time since 2019.

The Stampede parade will once again march through the streets of downtown and the University of Calgary is preparing for the return of the President’s Stampede Barbecue. UCalgary is a proud partner of the Calgary Stampede and is participating in numerous events on campus and around the city.

Here’s how you can get involved this year:

Discounted tickets for the Bell Grandstand Show

July 10 – 13 and 17

Stampede Park

The Calgary Stampede is once again offering the UCalgary community a 20 per cent discount on select evening show tickets, which includes the GMC Rangeland Derby and the Bell Grandstand Show. Tickets also include admission to Stampede Park.

The discount code is valid until July 4. Tickets can be purchased through the Calgary Stampede website with the promo code 2022UOFC.

Calgary Stampede parade

Friday, July 8, 9 a.m.

Downtown Calgary

The Stampede parade will kick off the 10 days of festivities. Bring your family, show your UCalgary pride and watch for Rex, the UC cheer squad, and the UCalgary float led by new Chancellor Jon Cornish as the parade moves through the downtown core. Learn more about the Stampede parade.

President’s Stampede Barbecue

July 12, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Taylor Family Digital Library quad, UCalgary main campus

The Stampede spirit is back on campus and President Ed McCauley invites you to enjoy a special lunch during the President’s Stampede Barbecue. Enjoy line dancing and live music around the campfire by Jaydee Bixby, an Albertan country singer, composer and 2007 Canadian Idol runner-up!

Watch your UCalgary email for an invitation, and RSVP to attend. UCalgary will once again be collecting donations for the SU Campus Food Bank and there will be a Stampede raffle in support of United Way during the event.

UCalgary on the Stampede grounds

When you’re down on the grounds, make a visit to Ag-tivity in the City, located in the Nutrien Western Event Centre (NWEC) and Agriculture Barns. Students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) will host an interactive booth every day during Stampede featuring hands-on activities and demonstrations.

While you’re there, don’t miss a new feature in the  NWEC’s Prime Time Program. Take part in UCalgary trivia and see how well you know your university for a chance to win prizes! Trivia will take place during three very popular events: on Sunday, July 10, during Heavy Horse Show – World Champion Six Horse Hitch; on Thursday, July 14, during Heavy Horse Pull Heavy Weight Finals; and on Friday, July 15, during the Cowboy Up Challenge. Read more about these events.

Stampede spirit on campus

Visit the Taylor Family Digital Library during the 10 days of Stampede to check out a special photo display on the digital screens, featuring historic Stampede photos from UCalgary’s digital archives.

Nickle Galleries is revisiting the long visual art history of the Calgary Stampede with an exhibit of bronze sculptures in the foyer of the TFDL. In the adjacent Museo Gallery Shop, catalogues are available from the 2010 exhibition The Art of the Calgary Stampede, which was hosted by Nickle Galleries and curated by Dr. Brian Rusted, PhD.

Watch UToday throughout Stampede to read features on UCalgary alumni participating in Stampede, to learn about some of the latest research in animal health and agriculture, and to learn more about Western history and culture.
