Nickie Nikolaou is part of a team that received funding from New Frontiers in Research Fund

The inaugural New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF), launched December 2018 by the federal government, is focused on supporting innovative, interdisciplinary research that has the potential to deliver significant benefits to Canadians. Twelve early-career University of Calgary researchers from across the academy received NFRF funding to pursue their high-risk, high-reward work.

With a grant of $250,000 over two years, the team, led by Dr. Amy Metcalfe, PhD of the Cumming School of Medicine, will examine the impact of residential proximity to fracking locations in Alberta on human reproduction and child development. The research proposes a unique scientific direction (i.e. studying the impact of residential proximity to fracking on human health) and brings new disciplines (i.e. engineering, economics, geography, health, law, and psychology) together with different perspectives to address an important research question.

Nickie brings expertise to the project in regard to the legal and regulatory framework for oil and gas development in Alberta, and the role of municipalities within that framework.
