ND Theatre: Jan. 29: Call for Voice Actors

For ND Radio Plays

We are looking for a variety of voice actors for a short series of plays to be produced in the next couple of weeks. This will be a short process and there will be a minimal time commitment, but this project will involve a LOT of people. Priority will be given to FIRST- and SECOND-year drama students, but we encourage everyone to check out the roles as there are plenty of opportunities.

AUDITIONS

For this audition, you’ll be asked to prepare as many chunks of text as you’d like from our selection. These don’t need to be memorized but should be prepared and not sightread.

Auditions will take place on Saturday, Jan. 30 from 12–5 p.m. in 15-minute chunks. There will be potential callbacks on Sunday, Jan. 31, if necessary.

Please submit the following information to joseph.mcmanus1@ucalgary.ca by Friday, Jan. 29 at the LATEST:

TEXT

ALEX - GENDER NON SPECIFIC
LEAD ROLE: Bedtime

Relax the legs. Ahhhhh. Clear the mind. Stare into the blackness... It’s not really blackness, is it? More of a fuzz. Moss? Static? Static. Maybe this is what the universe looks like. A void of static, but the static grains are galaxies. Woah… Hmmm, this is stupid, isn’t it? Shut up brain, I need sleep… What to dream about tonight? Hmmmm, something interesting… oh, what’s this little thought? Is that a pizza? Yes, a nice pepperoni pizza, let’s dream about that. Ooooh, that’s some ooey-gooey cheese. Oh yeah. And would you look at that crust, so thick and crispy. I could just ravish you right now DiGiorno, mmm-mmm-mmmm. You bettah shower me in your creamy feta! I don’t like where this is going, no more pizza thoughts. Switch topic; something else. Think about something else…

CATHERINE
LEAD ROLE: Paras

1. For years we have lived in this country! We work and toil for this land and every year our share gets smaller and smaller. We end up being forced to feel thankful to even live in our cities whose home prices raise ever higher and higher and our homeless shelters dwindle. Our people are starving, addiction is rampant. And who do we have to thank for that?

2. November 28th, 2021. Hi. If you’re listening to this its because something must have gone bad enough for either you or someone else to listen to this. If this is some sort of court thing well. Tough tits. My name is Catherine Nemours. But you’d already know that… You’re me. And you already know my therapist wanted me to do this. This is silly. Fuck it, I’ll try it. My therapist wanted me to keep a journal, but I don’t really care about writing, so I’m using my dad’s old cassette deck. Its crazy the things you keep around. Or… I keep around? God this is so weird.

MACKENZIE KING – Gentle voiced, jovial. Not unlike a narrator.
LEAD ROLE: Patriots Passage

Canada is a proud and powerful nation. It has colonized the hearts of millions, and is seen as a proud tenet of Western democratic peacekeeping. But how did this nation come to be? Though engrained in popular culture through stereotypes of speech and service, Canada’s history remains obscure. Take, for example, our protagonist, young Timmy Buckler. A Canadian youth, proud of his nation, but unaware of where his nation comes from! Say hello, Timmy.
