Participate in recognizing our postdoctoral scholars
Behind a large portion of academic research outputs on campus lies a group of more than 500 dedicated postdoctoral scholars. To acknowledge their collective efforts, UCalgary is participating in National Postdoc Appreciation Week (PAW) taking place Sept. 21 to 25.
UCalgary’s postdoctoral program has attracted top scholars who contribute to the university’s research capacity; it plays a significant role in promoting discovery, creativity, and innovation. During their tenure, faculties benefit from postdoctoral scholars’ diversity of experience and perspectives, and mentorship of graduate students.
“We are very lucky to have a strong presence of postdocs in our research community,” says Dr. Penny Pexman, associate vice-president (research) and postdoctoral program director. “They are passionate about making an impact and it shows in the commitment to their research.”
To support the academic careers of postdoctoral scholars, the Postdoctoral Office organizes exclusive workshops and opportunities for postdocs to connect with campus and their peers. This year, online workshops include career skills presented by UCalgary Career Services and exploring the unconscious bias with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Additionally, as a followup to last year’s inaugural event, the Postdoc Research Slam is going digital to accommodate distancing measures. Postdoctoral scholars are encouraged to apply with a lay abstract of their research, and selected candidates will receive coaching to present a three-minute video detailing their research in a pitch-style format.
New this year will be a People’s Choice prize awarded to the video with the most votes. The top three competitors will receive monetary research prizes provided by the Postdoctoral Office.
Community groups on campus
Postdoctoral scholars are spread across campus and promote discovery in research and innovation. To support them in professional development and the working relationships at the university, the Postdoctoral Fellows Association of the University of Calgary (PDAC) works closely with the Postdoctoral Office and other stakeholders to enhance their experience on campus.
“Our scholars are the best of the best,” says Andrew Beaudin, president of PDAC. “We want to ensure that they feel connected to the community and supported in the development of their academic careers.”
Postdoctoral scholars are also supported by the Postdoctoral Representatives Committee, which is comprised of 19 members from every faculty. Learn more about the Postdocs at UCalgary.
