Three students win RMMLF scholarships

Three second-year students have been awarded scholarships from the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation for 2019-2020.

Thomas Machell, Scott Carrière and Kenryo Mizutani have all been awarded scholarships from the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. The scholarships are awarded to students who  demonstrate a commitment to the study of natural resources law.

For Scott, receiving a scholarship from the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation is a terrific honour and amazing opportunity. "The award is the culmination of my interest and passion for natural resources law in Canada," he says. "My hope is to continue the development of the law in this area through further scholarship and practice in the energy and regulatory spheres. I would like to thank Professors Fenner Stewart and Jennifer Koshan for helping me to find and engage this passion through their mentorship and guidance."

"Receiving a scholarship from the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation is a great honour for me, as it is the leading institute in the field of natural resources law," says Kenryo. "As I previously worked in international energy transactions, this scholarship is a validation of both my professional and academic interests. After law school, I will pursue my career in Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), where I will be involved in international energy transaction and upstream project management. I would like to thank Professor Alastair Lucas for his encouragement and support throughout my time at the University of Calgary."

Thomas echoed Scott and Kenryo's sentiments, adding that being recognized by a leading organization in the field of natural resources law is what makes this scholarship especially meaningful. "Receiving this award has given me further motivation to focus my career in the field of natural resources law and shown me that my interest in this area has not gone unnoticed," he explains. "After school, I intend to practice either energy or regulatory law in Calgary. I’d also like to mention and thank Professor Oshionebo for his support with my scholarship application."
