UCalgary Board of Governors member to receive Alberta's highest honour

Steve Allan, a UCalgary Board of Governors member and alumnus, will be awarded with the Alberta Order of Excellence this year. Allan, BComm’67, along with seven other Albertans, were named as the 2017 inductees to this prestigious order, and will be invested at a ceremony to be held in Edmonton on Oct. 19.

As a governor of the University of Calgary since 2013, Allan has served as chair of the University’s Finance and Property Committee, and as a member of the Human Resources and Governance Committee, and the Executive Committee.

He is a fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta, having practiced in the areas of corporate restructuring, insolvency and forensic accounting, and throughout his career was involved in some of the most high-profile and complex files in Alberta. He holds the ICD.D designation with the Institute of Corporate Directors. 

Allan is currently chair of Calgary Economic Development, the Calgary Stampede Foundation and McMahon Stadium Society, and is board vice-chair of the Neyaskweyahk Trust of the Ermineskin Cree Nation. He served as chair of the Canadian Tourism Commission (now known as Destination Canada) for seven years, co-chair of the Calgary Poverty Reduction Initiative and chaired the Committee to Refresh Calgary’s Economic Strategy. Allan is a past-president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and the Rotary Club of Calgary.

The Alberta Order of Excellence is the province’s highest honour, bestowed on any current or former resident of Alberta and is an official part of the Canadian Honours System. Citizens are named to the order as a result of making an outstanding provincial, national or international impact.
