Winners: 2013 President’s Award for Excellence in Student Leadership

The University of Calgary’s many accomplished and talented students are a great source of strength and inspiration. As this academic year comes to an end, it is my pleasure to announce the recipients of The President’s Award for Excellence in Student Leadership for the June 2013 convocation. The award was established in 2008 to recognize exceptional students who have a record of academic achievement, consistently demonstrate leadership and make significant contributions to our community.

Sarah Damberger, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Communication Studies

Passionate about equality and human rights, Sarah helped the campus chapter of Amnesty International increase membership, deliver high-profile events and raise awareness. As the SU’s Faculty of Arts representative, Sarah helped build a new foundation and identity for students in the newly amalgamated faculty. She assisted in developing a new student lounge, and supported new students during orientation week.

Kelsey Hamill, Bachelor of Arts in English and History

Kelsey began her campus involvement with the Residence Athletics Council. She was active as a student leader on the Residence Students’ Association for two years, where she worked to support the transition of new students by providing advocacy and support. Kelsey integrated her love for running and sports with her commitment to raise money for cancer research and support.

Tyler Hume, Bachelor of Nursing

Tyler served on the Undergraduate Nursing Society and participated in the Faculty of Nursing’s Undergraduate Program Evaluation Committee. Tyler volunteered at open houses and was instrumental in co-ordinating the annual men in nursing recruitment event for high school students. He established the Nursing Guys Club to promote positive messages about male nurses and their role in health care.

Kenya-Jade Pinto, Bachelor of Arts in International Relations

As the SU’s Vice-President Academic, Kenya-Jade contributed to policies to guide the university and shared important insights about the student experience. She helped develop the Women in Leadership Club and served as Acting Ombudsperson for undergraduate students. She was a student spokesperson for Terry’s CAUSE on Campus for the Terry Fox Foundation and a volunteer photographer for AIDS Calgary.

Jacqueline Williamson, Bachelor of Health Sciences in Health and Society

Jacqueline has already begun her research career as author and co-author in science publications. She helped organize a research symposium, and initiated a speaking series for faculty to raise awareness of our university’s research. An accomplished athlete, Jacqueline won various medals for her achievements in ringette and shared her passion for the sport by coaching younger athletes.
